Gaming on a Mac is not what Apple is historically known for. However, with Apple delving into the fledgling virtual and augmented reality space, some traditional game interfaces and not so traditional interfaces (think HTC wands or Valve's knuckle controllers) now need to be supported on macOS to reap the VR/AR benefits to their fullest.
To ready you for some amazing VR pilot games such as Eve: Valkyrie that utilize a traditional game Xbox game controller, we're here to show you how to connect one to your Mac! In the past this method only applied to the Xbox 360 controller, but the latest version of the software you'll be using also now supports the Xbox One controller.
We're assuming that you already own a wired Xbox controller, but if you're needing to buy, a standard controller is about $50. You'll need to connect it to your Mac using a microUSB cable which, sadly, isn't included. If you buy a third-party wired controller you won't have to worry about this.
Next, follow these steps.
Download the latest release of the 360Controller driver. As of this writing, the latest release is 0.16.5.
Double-click the Install360Controller.pkg that pops up in Finder.
Again, click Continue.
Agree to allow a restart of the computer by clicking Continue Installation.
You can optionally have the downloaded file Moved to Trash.
Once you've installed the drivers, you'll now logically see that there are No devices found, since we have yet to physically connect the game controller to the Mac.
Click Security & Privacy.
Enter your password and click Unlock.
Your Xbox wired controller should now be connected!
I am super stoked about developers climbing aboard the VR/AR hype train. As a mere consumer of VR, I can only hope for more and more creative minds to get on board. If you're a VR/AR developer, or even better yet, a macOS VR/AR developer, what other ways can Apple help promote virtual reality on their platform? Let us know in the comments!
Updated April 2018: Updated to reflect that this method also now supports the Xbox One controller.

If you’re getting into PC gaming, chances are you’ll realize that some games are simply better played with a controller. While playing a PC first-person shooter with a controller is a crime against humanity in some jurisdictions, playing other games (especially platformers and third-person action games) with a controller is just fine.
As I’ve covered in a previous article, the Xbox One controller is a pretty solid option for PC gaming. Here’s how you can connect an Xbox One controller to a PC.

In December of 2005 two things happened: The Xbox 360 launched, and Microsoft introduced XInput to Windows XP SP1. In every version of Windows since then XInput has been integrated into the operating system to such an extent that any controllers supporting XInput are automatically recognized upon connection and don’t require the download of extra drivers in order to get working.
XInput controllers, as you may have guessed, include the Xbox One controller and the Xbox 360 controller. There’s also a variety of gamepads from other manufacturers that support XInput like Logitech’s F710 and SteelSeries’ Stratus XL.
Because of XInput, all you really need to worry about when it comes to connecting an Xbox pad on Windows is getting it connected. Here’s how to connect an Xbox One controller to a PC.
Wireless controllers are a bit more tricky than wired, though this probably isn’t very surprising. In order to get a Wireless Xbox One controller connected to your PC, you’ll need to have an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows or a Bluetooth adapter.
With an Xbox Wireless Adapter
Fortunately, you shouldn’t need to do much work with this one. Simply plug the Xbox Wireless Adapter into a USB port on your PC, then hold down the Sync button on both the controller and the adapter until your controller syncs up.
If this doesn’t work, you’ll need to dive into your settings. Open your Start Menu, then type “Bluetooth” and select “Bluetooth and Other Devices Settings.”
Click “Add Bluetooth or other device.”
Now, click “Everything else”.
Select your controller, and you’re all good.
With a Bluetooth Adapter
To connect an Xbox One controller to Windows via Bluetooth, you’ll need to have updated to Windows 10 Anniversary Update. If you haven’t updated Windows 10 or are on an older version of Windows, you’ll need to buy an Xbox Wireless Adapter or a compatible USB cable to connect with a wired connection.
If you are on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, feel free to continue.
Similar to how we started with the other method, you’ll want to start, type “Bluetooth” and select “Bluetooth and other devices settings.”
Make sure you have Bluetooth switched to On.
Hold the Sync button on your Xbox One controller for three seconds, then release it.
Select Xbox Wireless Controller, then Pair.
Congrats! You got your Xbox One Controller working on your PC.
On Windows 7 and up? Just plug it in! Try other USB ports or install this software if that doesn’t work.

Given that Microsoft owns both Xbox and Windows 10, it isn’t surprising that the two play nicely together. Microsoft is aware that a lot of people prefer to use a controller even when they aren’t playing on a console, and they’re actively bringing Xbox and Windows closer with UWP apps, Xbox mode in Windows 10, and upgrades to the Xbox that will make it play nicely with Windows. Including the XInput API into Windows core helps, too.
Both wired and wireless Xbox One controllers will work on a Windows PC, so even if you only have one or the other, you’re still good to try this out.
To use your Xbox One controller on your PC, you will obviously need a controller, an internet connected PC, and ten minutes of your time. The controller will either be USB, wireless, or Bluetooth. All will work with Windows.
The wired controller is the easiest to get working with a PC. The controller comes with a USB cable for charging, so all you need do is plug one end into your PC and the other into the controller. If you are using Windows 10, it should automatically detect the controller and ready it for use.
My Windows 10 installation downloaded and installed the drivers automatically. It took care of everything and the controller was ready in a few seconds. That’s because Windows 10 has the Xbox drivers installed as part of the Xbox accessories app.
If you use Windows 8, you will need to manually update the Device Manager.
If everything goes according to plan, then you should be good to start playing without any further fuss. But if automatic download doesn’t work, Techspot has the drivers for manual install.
To get a wireless Xbox One controller working, you will need a wireless adapter. The Xbox One should have one included, but you can buy one separately if you need to. They’re not the cheapest dongle you can get your hands on–it costs over half the price of the controller itself–but if you keep an eye open you might be able to find one secondhand, too.
Plug the wireless adapter into your PC and let Windows pick it up. If it doesn’t, try a different USB port. Windows should detect the adapter and install any drivers necessary to run it.
Then hold the Xbox button on the controller to turn it on and press the button on the adapter to make it search for the controller. Press the Bind button near the top of the controller and watch the blinking light. Once it stops blinking and goes solid, the controller and adapter have paired and you should be able to use it right away.
If you have the latest Xbox One controller, you may have Bluetooth capability. If that’s the case and your PC has a Bluetooth dongle or controller, you can use that to pair the two if you wish.
To get it working:
The process is quite painless, considering this is Microsoft we are talking about. As long as your PC is running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and has a functioning Bluetooth controller, it should be simple to connect the two devices.
If things don’t go quite to plan, or you like to stay current, you may want to update the Xbox One controller. You can do this via your Xbox One, as you might imagine, but you can also update it via the Xbox Accessories app within Windows. Once connected, your controller will be analyzed by the app and you may see an ‘Update Required’ message on the screen.
Follow the update wizard in the app to complete the process. It only takes a couple minutes and will take care of everything for you. Once updated, your Xbox One controller will be ready to use.
Using your Xbox One controller on your PC is very straightforward, even in the worst case scenario. Best case scenario is plug and play, with Windows taking care of everything automatically. Even if it doesn’t, updating drivers and pairing devices only takes a few minutes, and then you can game as hard as you like!
